Job Function: The manager of the O.R. is a registered professional nurse who directly supervises the registered nurses, surgical technicians, and ancillary staff in the performance of their daily duties. The manager is a functioning staff member in the O.R., in which their duties will include performing all the tasks of which his/her staff perform, as well as assuming the administrative and financial responsibility for all functions in the operating room. The manager evaluates the quality of perioperative nursing care rendered to all patients undergoing surgical intervention on a 24-hour basis.

Job Qualifications:

  • Must be currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Kansas, and must be familiar with the basic nursing performance standards as outlined in the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Degree or taking courses for degree preferred.
  • CNOR desirable
  • Certification in CPR
  • Completion of basic arrhythmia interpretation course is desired.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the operating room; supervisory or in-service experience desired.
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of management skills and principles with a desire to expand his or her knowledge and experience in this area.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the perioperative care of surgical patients.
  • An ability to assess the educational needs of the staff and department and to develop and implement appropriate actions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of teaching skills and the ability to use them.
  • Knowledge of Patient’s Rights.
  • Knowledge of hospital and nursing policies and procedures and the functions of other departments within the hospital.
  • Knowledge of hospital fire and safety regulations and disaster plans.
  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical safety practices as they apply to the department.
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and aseptic techniques.
  • Knowledge of hospital bylaws and their application with the department.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Kansas Consent Laws.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to use, specialized equipment in the operating room.
  • Evidence of continuing education in the field of operating room nursing and management skills.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises registered nurses, surgical technicians, and ancillary staff in the performance of their daily duties in the surgical suite and work areas:
    • ensures that hospital and departmental policies and procedures are carried out
    • ensures that aseptic technique is practiced
    • performs all the above duties that his/her staff members perform
  • Plans, develops, recommends, implements, and directs the orientation and continuing education programs for the department:
    • identifies the individual and departmental educational and training needs
    • plans, develops, and recommends continuing education programs to meet the identified needs
    • determines which programs will be presented by self, department, and/or hospital employees, physicians, or other outside sources
  • Implements the approved educational programs by:
    • departmental in-service classes
    • making available pertinent reference and reading materials
    • recommending attendance at pertinent workshops and seminars
  • Plans, develops, recommends, and implements formal orientation programs for all personnel (nursing and ancillary) new to the department, including, but not limited to:
    • departmental policies and procedures
    • standards of performance expected in all aspects of their duties
    • “Hands on” experience with all pieces of equipment and specialty instrumentation
    • An awareness and understanding of other hospital departments with whom we are closely associated
  • Conducts ongoing “classroom” instruction
    • demonstrates the use and care of equipment and supplies
    • provides supervised work assignments for individuals to demonstrate their acquired knowledge and skills
    • continually reviews and evaluates the individual’s practical application of knowledge and skills, providing additional training as required
  • Informs Chief of Surgery when procedural problems appear to be due to physician educational needs, rather than those of the department.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of ongoing educational programs including class content, evaluations, and employee attendance records.
  • Informs other areas of Department of Operating Room Service programs that are applicable to them also.
  • Resolves staff questions or problems
    • refers problems unable to handle to either Director of Nursing or Chief of Surgery
  • Writes and gives employees their evaluations
  • Observes cost containment practices, evaluates and recommends appropriate inventory levels
  • Provides input and recommendations for preparation and implementation of capital and operational budgets
  • Actively participates in development and implementation of quality assurance programs.
  • Provides direct patient care in the operating room
    • familiar with, and able to perform, all duties of personnel under his or her supervision
  • On-call for emergencies and additional duties
  • Efficiently controls and coordinates the daily O.R. schedule
  • Coordinates the anesthesia and operating room schedule
  • Assists with the scheduling operation
  • Supervises the compilation of monthly statistical report
  • Handles intradepartmental policies and questions regarding technique
  • Responsible for the monthly time and call schedules, with regard to the surgery schedule and requests for time off
  • Completes employee injury reports with evaluation and follow-up of incident
  • Counsels and disciplines employees in an appropriate and effective manner
  • Assists with interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination of employees
  • Maintains availability and working status of instruments and equipment
    • ascertains that broken and/or missing instruments are promptly repaired or replaced.
    • Arranges for loaner equipment when necessary
    • Recommends ordering of new equipment when necessary
