On December 27, 2017, CMS Medicare released its third Hospital Compare star rankings for more than 4,000 participating Medicare certified hospitals in the US. Hospital Compare summarizes up to 57 quality measures into a single star rating, making it easier to compare hospitals side by side and to each other. General information, such as name, address, telephone number, type of hospital and other general information is provided. In addition, Hospital Compare lists surveys of patients’ experiences, timely and effective care, complications and death, unplanned hospital visits, use of medical imaging, such as CT scanners and MRI units, and, lastly, patient payments and value of care. In summary, Hospital Compare helps individuals make decisions about where they want to receive their health care and encourages hospitals to improve their quality of care.
Kansas Heart Hospital achieved a five (*****) star hospital ranking for the third consecutive time period published by CMS. In Kansas, Kansas Heart Hospital is only one of two facilities which has received the prestigious five (*****) star ranking during each of the published rankings periods dating back to 2016; the other Kansas hospital is Premier Surgical Institute in Galena, Kansas. “Having achieved a five star ranking is one thing, but, as the numbers point out, it is extremely difficult to maintain a five star ranking,” said Joyce Heismeyer, COO of Kansas Heart Hospital. In the December 27, 2017 CMS rankings, 10 Kansas hospitals out of 337 Medicare certified Kansas hospitals achieved a five (*****) star rating. Nationally, only 337 hospitals out of greater than 4,000 Medicare certified hospitals received a five (*****) star rating or approximately 8%.
