The annual Wichita Business Journal CFO Award’s luncheon was held at the Hyatt Hotel on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Steve Smith, CFO at Kansas Heart Hospital, was one of fifteen (15) honorees who were recognized at the event. Bill Roy, editor of the Wichita Business Journal, announced the recipients and commented that “the Wichita Business Journal created the CFO Awards in 2010 not only because these talented people deserve to be recognized, but also because I have gained a new respect for what they do every day.”
Steve began his Kansas Heart Hospital career in 1998 and was instrumental in the development of the hospital from its earliest beginnings. Kansas Heart Hospital was a true “start-up” healthcare organization says Greg Duick MD, co-founder and current President and Chairman. Additionally, Dr. Duick commented that Steve is “a CFO who wears many hats and does an outstanding job.” His duties include not only overall financial oversight for KHH but Steve manages the lab and pharmacy operations, the IT department, the business office, the hospital’s employed anesthesiologists and he co-manages surgery, X-ray and the heart cath lab areas.
Steve says the biggest ongoing challenges for Kansas Heart, and health care in general, are “adapting to ever-changing federal regulations and dealing with changing reimbursement structures.” He has served on committees for the Midwest Chapter of the American Heart Association, helped develop the Kansas Heart Hospital mentoring program for Wichita West High School students and is an active member in his church, St. Mary’s Parish in Derby. He likes to play golf and he and his wife, Michelle, enjoy spending time at Table Rock Lake in Southwestern Missouri with their family.
